Aspendos, the remains that shed light on the architecture of the ancient Greek gods and Aspendos Ancient city is located in the city of Antalya, in the village of Belkis in the Serik district.

How can you go to Aspendos?

In order to reach this region, you first have to reach Antalya by air. It is approximately 37 km away from the east of Antalya. After this journey you have to reach the Eurymedon River by 7 kilometers further. The ancient city was built right beside this glittering river in ancient Greece.

The most important reason why the ancient city is today a world famous tourism region is the ancient theater remains bearing the architectural traces of the period. When you visit Aspendos, you can see the scene in which the most important tragedies of the period and comedy writers are exhibited. According to ancient Greek legend, the city was founded by the Argive colonic leaders under the hero Mopsos who came to Pamphylia after the Trojan War.

History of Aspendos

Aspendos Ancient city, 8 km east of the Serik district was established. The city was built by Akkadians in the 10th century BC. The world famous tiyarosu was given to the city by the Romans. Aspendos is one of the wealthiest towns of the city, so there was a great deal of artistic activity here that appealed to the upper class.

Since the history of the city extends to ancient times, it is difficult to obtain accurate information about its foundation. For this reason it is also possible to see in the history books the assertions established by the city’s Agrus structure in the works of historians such as Strabon and Pamponpus Mela. This ancient theater is one of the most robust examples of theatricals from the Roman era today. Zenon, the son of Theodorus, the architect of Aspendos. Antonius Piu was completed in the time of Marcus Aurelius (138-164). The theater was presented to the emperor’s family with the local gods of the city.

The Legend of Aspendos

Within the borders of Turkey, it is possible to find many ancient cities, mysterious regions and colored legends. While some of these myths have reached the present day, a few of them have become the subject of films, serials. The legend of Aspendos is not known by many people today but it has a separate prescription.

According to heresy, the king of Aspendos has a beautiful daughter whom everybody wants to marry for a while. Because the king did not know who to give his daughter to the public, he announces to the public, “I will give my daughter to her if she makes the most useful thing for our people, our city.” On top of that two twin sisters make two big buildings. One is a long way from the city, passing through many difficulties in complex roads, water-bearing aqueducts; It is the acoustically best theater of the world where the voice is heard even from the upper lines when metal money is thrown in the middle of the other. After seeing the King’s aqueducts, he would like to give her aqueducts. On top of that, the theater’s architect Zenon plays a king. As the king sees the top of the theater, he whispers: “King should give me his daughter.”

The city is one of the richest cities of the time. This is the first city in the region to repay money on its behalf. This situation caused problems between the central authority and the city in the period. The reason for the fact that the period is the richest city is mentioned in the surrounding settlement centers. Recently, it was observed that the Aspendos city was recorded by different civilizations of the period in the inscriptions in Anatolia.

We do not want more academical knowledge to squeeze our attention as Aspendos has witnessed many points of city history. For this reason, I close this section by saying that the city is home to people and states like Persians, Romans, and Alexander the Great in the past.

Let us briefly mention the architectural structure of Aspendos. As we have already mentioned, the city is one of the richest regions of the period. For this reason, many civilizations have become an observer. The ancient cities as well as the buildings that are established are also eye-catching. It is correct to examine the architectural structure of Aspendos city before and after the theater in two different ways. The city, which literally carries the traces of the classical Greek civilization and holds a lot of gods, carries traces of Roman architecture after being taken by the Romans. The best example of this is the ancient city theater. This gigantic structure was presented as a city to display the magnificence of the Roman empire. The theater was built at the point where you can see the sunrise and sunset in the clearest possible way. In addition, the acoustics of the ancient theater are as effective as today’s architects.
