Harran Turkey is from the Assyrian period. Harran is is locetd in 40 km south of Sanliurfa Turkey. Harran/ Karrhai, which gives its name to Northern Mesopotamia. This plain is always productive, and since ancient times. Similar to thousands of years ago, the settlements here are cone-shaped houses, with pointed roofs, and built from earth, mud and brick. These houses are cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Harran, located 40 km southeast of Sanliurfa Turkey, is in the center of the plain which bears its name. Asssyrians gave a great importance to here for being on important trade routes. A great temple was built for very popular Moon god Sin.
Harran Turkey became an important cultural center after taken over by Muslim Arabs in the 7th century A.D. Remains of the one of the oldest mosque of Anatolia, Harran Ulu Mosque, still can be seen. It was built by Umayyad rules Marwan II in years between 744 and 750. The structure which was expanded by Aleppo ruler Nureddin Mahmud Zengi in 1174 covered large area.
The most interesting structures of the Harran Turkey are conw-shaped domed houses. These houses are cool in summers and warm in winters according to the climate.
