Do you know Harem? This word belongs to Ottoman Empire Culture. Actually, Harem one of the sections of Ottoman’s palaces. Generally people thinks, The section were special for the sultans (prince of the Empire) and Convubines. Ofcourse it is including this, but all government men and women were live in this section. All Concubines were educated by great teacher during the reign of Ottoman Empire.

Costumes of Concubines (I mean Harem pants, jumpsuit vs.. ) were special for they. And the Padisah (King of the Empire) had been selected one Concubines for being Queen. This concubine named Gözde. Maybe you know, there is a tv series about this. Name of this series is Muhtesem Yuzyil (Magnificent Centruy). İt is about great love of Suleyman the Magnificent and Hurrem Sultan whic is you can find a video about this under this line. And also there is anime show about the Harem which has same name.

Harem Definition And Topkapi Palace

Starting from behind Kubbealtıat Second Courtyard, it extends towards the West wing until Hırka-i Saadet Office at the Third Courtyard. It is a complex structure that consists of hundreds of rooms with one or two floors that line around small courtyards. Harem was a section where Ottoman dynasty and their severs resided and a place where only the attendants could enter. Inside, it consists of about 400 rooms, 9 hammams, 2 moque, 1 hospital, 1 laundry, pools and dormitory.

The first section that is entered from Gate of Carts (Arabalar Kapısı)  belongs to Kara Ağalar of African origin who are on guard of the Harem doors. At this section, there are many locations for living and religious exercise. After this section, one may reach Cümle Kapısı (main gate of the Harem) that connects to the three main sections of the Harem. On the location that Cümle Kapısı opens to, the one on the left opens to Cariyeler courtyard, the middle one opens to Valide courtyard, the one on the right opens to Golden Road (Altınyol) and Mabeyn Courtyard (the roomof Sultan and his sons).

At Cariyeler section, Concubines of many different races were seated who provided inner services at the Harem. Their numbers changed between 250-1000 according to age and they were generally taken by the palace at age 10-16, provided with education and taught Turkish, writing – reading, religion rules, literature, music and handcrafts. Most of them were given to laundry, cellar, table works for service. Among the concubines, there are examples who became the wife of sultan such as Hürrem Sultan (Russian origin), Safiye Sultan (Venetian origin), Kösem Sultan (Roman or Boşnak origin) and Hatice Turhan Sultan (Russian origin) At Valide courtyard, Chambers of the Queen Mother (Valide) is the largest and most impotant location after sultan’s locations. Valide Sultan (Queen Mother), the mother of the sultan, had a respectful position at Harem. The most senior staff a Harem took her orders. If the sultan died or descended the throne, his mother left her position to the new Valide Sultan and moved to Old Palace. If sultan’s mother died, it was upon his will to bring his wet-nurse or a faithful concubine to the condition of Valide Sultan.

Mabeyn Section which is reached through Altınyol opens on one side which is different from other courtyards. At Harem, there are structures that reflect classical Ottoman taste with their architectural features and ornamentation style.

At Hünkar Sofrası (the Imperial Hall) which is the largest location of the Harem; meetings, greeting ceremonies in Bayram, various entertainments and ceremonies were held.

Accommodations that constitute the pieces of Harem life shall be visited such as Murat III Has Room, Double Hammam Chamber of Ahmet III also known as Dried Fruit Room because of the plates on its walls full af flowers and fruit and Çifte Kasırlar (The Twin Kiosk). (read more…)
