Kuşadası is located in the Gulf of the same name, opposite Güvercin (Pigeon ) Island. It is known that the first settlement in the prehistoric period was established at the place known as Kadi Island. It is understood that this was built in order to protect the ships in the trade between the Aegean cities and islands and Ephesus. Later, because of transportation difficulities, the settlement moved to the present location of the current city. The region, which experienced the same historical process as other western Anatolian cities, always continued to function as an important port, due to the port of the ancient city of Ephesus filling with silt, and Ephesus becoming an inland city. Ephesus and Kuşadası were the last stop port of the Silk Route between Central Asia and Europe, and continued in this importance throughhout every period of history. During the Byzantine period, the small island opposite the city was used as a military base. The region became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1413, and continued its same function during the Ottoman period. In 1834, a castle was built on Güvercin Island by the Ottomans.
The most important historical monuments in the city is the caravanserai commmisioned by Öküz Mehmet Paşha in 1618, with rectangular shape, a porch and chambers, and two storeys. The caravanserai today serves as an hotel and tourist bazaar. Other historical monuments in Kuşadası are the Çifte Hamam (Bath House), Taş (Stone) Church, with its rectangular shape and single apse, and Kaleiçi Mosque, with its single dome rising above 12 arches. Today,, with its unique beaches, conservation areas such as the Davutlar National Park, world-class accommodation facilities, fish restaurants and entertainment venues, it is one of the country’s important center of tourism.
