It is known that the first settlement in the prehistoric period was established at the place known as Kadi Island. It is understood that this was built in order to protect the ships in the trade between the Aegean cities and islands and Ephesus.  Later, because of transportation difficulities, the settlement moved to the present location of the current city. The region, which experienced the same historical process as other western Anatolian cities, always continued to function as an important port, due to the port of the ancient city of Ephesus filling with silt, and Ephesus becoming an inland city. The region became part of the Ottoman Empire  in 1413, and continued its same function during the Ottoman period. In 1834, a castle was built on Güvercin Island by the Ottomans.
