This place is known as Çamlıca because of the pine groves on the hills of Büyük (Grand) and Küçük (Small) Çamlıca (Çam means pine tree in Turkish). Today, only a few of the old pines exist, with most of the trees on Büyük Çamlıca having been planted in recent years. Küçük Çamlıca used to be called Yeni (New) Çamlıca, and was renovated in the era of Sultan Mehmed IV and transformed into a park. Murad IV constructed a mosque and a pavilion here. At that time, Büyük Çamlıca was considered to be distant forest; there was a lodge here and garden known as Bağ-ı Cihan. You can recognize both hils of Çamlıca from far away by the huge radio transmitters. There are many pavilions and gardens in both parks. The pavilion restaurants in both parks are run by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.
