Despite many hotels at Beyoğlu that could not reach today, Pera Palas is outside of this group. Istanbul became livelier after the railway system extension at the end of 19th century and the city needed more comfortable hotels. Pera Palas was built in order to meet this need and opened for service in 1895.
The most famous train that carries passengers to Istanbul through railways was Orient Express. During its first years in line between Paris Istanbul, it started to serve with a transfer from ships between 1883 and 1977. Orient Express becoming a topic of many writers such as Graham Greene and Agatha Christeie caused the train to be very famous worlwide.
The design of Pera Palas Istanbul belongs to Alexandre Vallaury. The structure which is among the most beautiful examples of 19th century has nine floors aong with basement floors. With classical elements, Art Nouveau style also ornements the architecture. Among the guests of the hotel that welcomed many famous people, there were Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Ismet İnönü, Agatha Christie and Ernest Hamingway.
