Marmaris History

Marmaris, located on the southwestern tip of the country, on the cost of the Gulf of the same name. The Harbour Fort at the place where the city is situated expanded with the arrival of the Carians, and later, those returning from the Trowan War, and grew in importance. The original name of the city which is the Caria region was “Pısaska” , meaning “Resin treed peninsula”. Later this name was changed to “Physkos”, meaning “tripe”, by the Greeks. The peninsula were Marmaris is situated is covered with resin and pine three forests famous for their tar. Today, as in the ancient period, and used in the treatment of illnesses, particularly stomach and intestinal sicnesses. Therefore, an appropriate name was given to the region. The city undertook the important function of a port of the inland cities within the Carian Union. Later, it came under he dominance of the Persians, people of Rhodes, Romans, and Byzantines.

The region became part of the Türkmenoğlu Menteş Beyliği in 1284, and the Ottoman Empire in 1391. In 1872 an earthquake caused major damage. The oldest artefact that can be seen in the city is the Harbour Fort, and Sultan Suleiman restores this fort and transformed it into a cervansarai. On the south side of Marmaris, on top of a small hill, there is the place whic is understood it have been used as the necropolis of the city, and the remains of the walls of a small medieval castle. The ruins remaining from the acropolis which was looted by Geneoese pirates are a marble lion shinx without its head, the embossment of a person and horse on a gravestone, adn a marble head, and a figure of a Roman woman. Other ancient ruins in the region are Ketrea / Cedar Island, Idyma, Gokova, Larimna, Lorima, and Kasarea.

Known For: Marmaris today has world famous accommodation facilities, restaurants, yatch tourism, underwater diving, paragliding avtivites, and natural beaches and coves, making it a world-famous centre for tourism.
