Mahmut II is the Sultan who made important innovations of modernization of Ottoman State from the military, educational, administrative and social perpectives. After his reign of 30 years (1808-39) he died as a result of his ilness on 1st July 1839. The opening of the Tomb that started after his death was made on 11th November 1840. The octagon planned tomb is covered with rich floral reliefs with a diameter of 17 meters and it consititues a direct bulge towards Divanyolu Street. Towards to Sultanahmet side, there is the water fountain built with the tomb.
In the Tomb, there are srcophagi of Mahmut II (1808- 1839), Abdulaziz (1861-1876) and Abdulhamit II (1876- 1909). The courtyard next to the tomb was turned into graveyard after 1861 and it mostly consists of graves of important officials, authors and poets.
