Hagia Sophia! This unbelievable structure has 1500 years history. Hagia Sophia is one of the important structure of ıstanbul Turkey, also it is known as one of the most important historical places of the world. This is why there so many urban legends about Hagia Sophia. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality decided to collect urban legend about Hagia Sophia. Dr. Ferhat Aslan searched about Hagia Sophia legends during the 9 years. In this article, we’ll tell brief stories from his book.
1 . An Angel is waiting for Hagia Sophia
The workers that they worked in costruction of Hagia Sophia, someday they leaved from the construction area and entrusted the this structure to young worker. And then suddenly a unknown person specified on cunstruction area and said like that “Where is your friends? They are lost for a lon time..go and call them all.” The young person answered to like that “I can’t go, I have to protect to materials of teh construction.” The unknown person said: “Go! I can protect for you and I never leave untill you come to back.” Youg man went to other worker and told them whole story. When the Emperor of Constantine heard this story, he decided; this unknonwn person is an angel and He never send to back young worker. Thus, The angel can protect to Hagia Sophia forever.
2 . The door with charms.
According to Legend; Hagia Sophia has 361 doors, but only 101 door are big and they have charms. Because there is mystic event about the doors. When someone try to count of doors of the structure suddenly extra one door comes up….
3 . Relics of Jesus
According to legend; The emperor of Constantine took the relics of Jesus from Jeruselam and he put them in secret sections of Hagia Sophia. Because they believe; Jesus will rebirth after 40.000 years later in this amazing structure.
4 . Date of Doom
If you enter the Hagia Sophia from south gate, you will see a date on third column of structure. The date is “18, Sunday, year 1034.” According to legend this date was wrote by Idris Prophet.
5 . The Devil who is prison in Hagia Sophia
According to legend; After the conquest, Sultan Mehmet II the conqueror ordered for turn into a mosque to Hagia Sophia. But he gave time to workers; it must be finish until to Friday prayer. (You should know Friday prayer is special for Muslim) By the way, Devil did’nt want to Hagia Sophia turn into a mosque and İt decided to stop to workers. The devil did one’s best, but Akşemsettin (He is known as teacher of Sulten Mehmet) to noticed this and pray to his God. After the pray, his god accepted his pray and locked the devil in one of the sections of Hagia Sophia.
6 . Hagia Sophia was turned to Qibla
First of all the Qibla means the special direction for muslims. After the conquest of Istanbul, Sultan Mehmet the conqueror wanted to render of the first Friday pray. When he started, broke his pray again and again. The muslims asked, “What happend?” Sultan said like that, “I want to see Kaaba.” I din’t see first and second time because of this I broke my pray but when I was third time, I did see the Kaaba. After this, Muslims asked to Akşemsettin, “How?” Akşemsettin said to them, “Prophet Idris did it.”
7 . The Column which was punctured with tears of Virgin Mary
According to legend; There is a column in Hagia Sophia. This column was punctured with the tears of Virgin Mary. This event was happening when Jesus was captured by emperor’s army and tortured. So, Virgin Mary was started to cry for they tortured her son and her tears punctured the column.
8 . The Holy Bowl and Lost Priest
A priest was giving a sermon to people when Istanbul was conquered by Ottoman Empire. The priest had not wanted ; holy bowl was took by Ottomans and he interrupted his sermon than go. According to legend of Hagia Sophia the priest cross over the one of the doors of this structure, but the muslims saw that and they went after him. But, when they reached the door that ıt was cross over by the priest, they saw only a wall. According to legend, The priest will wait there with holy bowl untill Hagia Sophia was took to back from muslims.
9 . Secret of the Hagia Sophia’s Plates
According to legend; When the Hagia Sophia was turned into a mosque, the muslims added to it some kind of plates and they did write down on the plates; Allah, Muhammad and other important names of muslims. In the Republic period, when the Hagia Sophia was turned into a museum, the people wanted spread out of Hagia Sophia and this plates. But, they couldn’t…
10 . Fish Figure of Hagia Sophia
There is a fish figure in front of the Emperor gate of Hagia Sophia. According to legend; when Sultan Mehmet II conquered to the Istanbul, some priests of Hagia Sophia was cooking fish in a pan. And suddenly, The fish heard to news of conquered of Istanbul and they became rebellious after this they jumped to out of the pan and became stone figure.
