Hürrem Sultan (1500? -1558)
She was a concunbine of Russian origin, Kanuni Sultan Suleyman‘ beloved life and the first Haseki Sultan of Christian origin (haseki: the concubine that bears the child of the sultan). He was among the favorites of Kanuni who ascended the throne in 1520. In 1521, she gave birth to Shehzade Mahmed and gained the right to be the wife of the sultan. Among with her only doughter Mihrimah Sultan, she gave birth to five male children among wich there was Selim II who later became the sultan. After the death of Hafsa Sultan, the mother of Kanuni in 1533, Hürrem Sultan became the solo leader of the palace and was mentioned with many contrivances. In order to pave the road for her sons, she was the main player in the incident where Shehzade Mustafa was killed by drowning; he was the son of Kanuni from Mahidevran Sultan and was loved very much by everybody. She died in 1558 and buried to the garveyard of Suleymaniye Mosque and then a tomb was made here half of which is oremented by tiles.
Here, among with Hürrem Sultan, Shehzade Mehmet the son of Selim II and the grandson of Hurrem- and the daughter of Hatice Sultan -Sister of Kanuni- are buried.
