Kanuni Sultan Suleyman (1495 – 1566)
The son of Yavuz Sultan Selim, Kanuni Sultan, known by the westerms as “Magnificent” and “Great Turk”, ascended the throne on 30th September 1520 and durign his reign that listed for 47 years, he made Ottoman Empire one of the most powerful states in the world. The Sultan who remained on the Ottoman Throne for the longest period conquared Belgrade (1521), Rhodes (1522) and Hungry (1526). With the land he conquared in Nrth Africa and Middle East, He made the Mediterrenean a Turkish lake.Eventually, he went out the Szigetvar Expedition. After a long siege, Szigetvar Castle was taken, but Kanuni, whose old body could not make it through the voyage, died before he could see the castle taken. In order not to depress the armies, his death was kept a secrect for a while. His tom is at the graveyard of Suleymaniye Mosque at the side of the Mihrab. Here apart from Kanuni, his doughter Mihrimah Sultan, Ahmet II (1691 -1695) and his wife Rabia Sultan and Suleyman II are buried.
